Editorial Reviews:
This luxurious pearl strand showcases a beautiful mix of White and Golden South Sea baroque pearls, with widths that range from 10 to 12 millimeters. The distinctive ridged pearls have a beautiful luster and glow with natural silvery-white and golden colors that make them a beautiful complement to gold, silver, or platinum jewelry. A fluted ball clasp, in radiant 14 karat yellow gold, finishes this hand-strung 17-inch necklace.
Rare and exquisite South Sea pearls are produced by the Pinctada Maxima mollusk. These oysters thrive in the waters of Australia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, where they grow to impressive sizes. Nucleated with a large bead, and pampered in warm, pristine waters, the oysters produce exceptionally large pearls with an unusually thick nacre and a beautiful satiny luster. Because the process is time consuming (requiring at least two years for a single pearl) and because the oysters are highly sensitive to cultivation, South Sea pearls are rare and quite valuable. They make a unique and extraordinary gift.

Customer Rating: Summary: Absolutely THRILLED With This Necklace! Comment: I've shopped with Amazon for years, and have bought quite a few pearls from Amazon during that time. I've also taken the GIA pearl course, and have studied pearls for a few years, including the purchase of "The Pearl Book" by Antoinette Matlins, P.G. from Amazon. Locally, we have a few high end jewelry stores that sell Tahitian and South Sea pearls.
I say all of that, because this necklace is by far my best Amazon purchase ever! When I saw the very low sale price and read the description stating the pearls are heavily flawed with only moderate luster, I hesitated. The picture didn't appear to have heavily flawed pearls, and seemed to have good luster so I took a chance, figuring worst-case scenario I could send them back. Well, it seems this is the exact same necklace pictured. These are excellent pearls with good luster and only a few mild surface flaws. Since they're baroque pearls, the flaws truly aren't noticeable--there are no pits or scratches at all. The colors range from white, to a greenish white, to slightly golden beige and then varying shades of gold. It's a very well made necklace, and I know from the jewelry stores locally, would retail for over $1000 (probably between $2000 and $4000) if I'd bought it through one of our local stores. In other words, this necklace is a steal!
I could never have afforded a South Sea pearl strand any other way... and know this for a fact, since I've been looking for several years. Thanks to Amazon, I now have South Sea pearls added to my pearl collection for about 1/10th the jewelry store price!
note: as stated on the web page, they'll arrive in a blue velvet pouch tucked into a blue box, and please be aware they should be stored in that satin-lined, velvet pouch
